Sharlinie may be a victim of trafficking
By RASHITHA A. HAMID
Sharlinie: Missing since Jan 9
KUALA LUMPUR: Sharlinie Mohd Nashar may have been smuggled out of the country by a human trafficking syndicate.
This is an angle police are investigating since the five-year-old had gone missing on Jan 9.
For the first time, Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said that Sharlinie's case might involve an international syndicate.
He was speaking to reporters after launching the First Asean Regional Crime Prevention Foundation (ARCPF) working group meeting yesterday.
He said this when replying to a question on whether Sharlinie's case was linked to international human trafficking syndicate.
Sharlinie was believed to have been abducted while playing at a playground near her house in Taman Medan, Petaling Jaya.
Musa said the issue of human trafficking would be discussed during the meeting, which started yesterday and ends tomorrow.
He said police would continue working with their Asean counterparts in collating information on human trafficking.
Earlier in his speech, Musa said human trafficking was a crime against humanity and there was a need for an integrated approach to curb it and protect the victims.
He said virtually every country in the world was affected by sexual exploitation and forced labour.
“These have evolved into transnational organised crime which is a threat to human security,” he said.
Transnational organised crime includes trafficking in drugs, human beings and firearms, smuggling of migrants and money laundering.
Musa said that ARCPF could work closely with governments, international organisations and civil society to counter the pervasive influence of organised and drug trafficking.

Held on suspicion of rape
JOHOR BARU: Police arrested a construction worker yesterday on suspicion of raping his 4-year-old daughter at their house in Kangkar Pulai here.
Nusajaya police chief Superintendent Aziz Ahmad said the suspect, who is in his 30s, was picked up after the child's mother lodged a police report.
"Investigations revealed the child complained to her mother that her private parts were painful."Upon checking, the woman noticed that the girl's private parts were reddish. "The child was sent for a medical checkup at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital," Aziz said.
The suspect, who has two other children aged 6 years and 3 months, is under police custody pending the outcome of the medical report.
TO A 4 YEAR OLD?????? Gggrrrrrrrrr
Shocked over hubby molesting own daughter
KUALA LUMPUR: A clerk was shocked to learn that her husband had been molesting their seven-year-old daughter during a routine weekend visit to her mother's place.
The child had apparently told her grandmother about the ordeal of her being “teased'' by her 44-year-old father in November last year.
The 31-year-old woman lodged a police report against her bus conductor husband and yesterday the man was jailed 24 months by a magistrate's court here for committing molestation.
The man admitted to molesting the girl in a condominium in Jalan Genting Klang in Setapak between 9am and 9.30am between Nov 1 and Nov 30, 2007.
The court was told that the girl confided in her grandmother about her father's teases and that the teasing involved him pressing his body against her and putting his private parts against hers.
The clerk had on Dec 8 took her daughter to a playground near her house and asked her if the incident had occurred.
The victim admitted that her father had twice tried to put his private parts into hers while her mother was at work.
Pleading for leniency before magistrate Nazran Mohd Sham, the accused said he had taken good care of his child including bathing her while at home.
The accused asked the court to consider his future saying that he and his mother were also sick.
He claimed that there were people looking for him for his debts.
Assistant public prosecutor Norhanum Hassan pressed for a deterrent sentence, saying that the accused has two previous convictions for possession of stolen property and theft.
“The incident had also traumatised the child,” she said, adding that the court had to consider the public interest, seriousness of the actions and that the sexual offences against children were rampant.
Nazran ordered the man to serve his jail term from his date of arrest on Dec 11 last year.
Let him rot in jail, for all I care...
